Resumen

A new process of removal of anthracite particles contained in water was investigated, taking advantage of the segregation properties of the secondary flow in a curved open channel, through physical and numerical investigation. In physical research, two channels were constructed in which water depth data, velocity vector field with ADV, and removal efficiency values were obtained. The numerical experimentation was carried out through computer codes distributed by Ansys Inc. (FLUENT and CFX), which incorporate the Eulerian-Eulerian and Eulerian-Lagrangian mathematical models for the simulation of water flow and anthracite particles. A close relationship was found between the separation efficiency along the curved channel with the strength of secondary circulation and between the efficiency and the helical pitch of the anthracite particles in their transit along the channel curve, relations previously unknown and that are a significant contribution of the present work. In the methodological procedure, a new methodology was proposed for the calibration of numerical models, incorporating the theory of lack of fit with near-neighbors in the classical theory of statistical design of experiments (DOE). The effect of the angle of curvature on the efficiency was investigated, finding that it has an important effect, where the maximum values of the efficiency are between 45 ° and 60 °, range in which the systems of removal can be located; It is interesting to note that this result is different from that reported in the literature, where it has been found that the removal efficiency is reduced by increasing the angle of curvature after 15°. The effect of cross section geometry on efficiency was evaluated with four sections: rectangular, trapezoidal, triangular and elliptical, which show important differences, increasing the efficiency value for the triangular and elliptical sections. The development of a new methodology that allows the calibration of hydrodynamic models and a robust methodology to measure velocity fields with the ADVVPII, the quantification of the effect of the geometric characteristics of the curved channels and the properties of the flow on the processes of separation and magnitudes which characterize the secondary flow, is considered as a generation of new knowledge and constitute the main contribution to the state of the art of the present research to the subject of hydrodynamic separation of particles.
